After the LONGEST-EVER wait and patient endurance of whatever the hell has been going on at MAP for the past year, Amy Boone-McCreesh FINALLY gets to present her excellent exhibition for [what would have been last year's] Curators' Incubator. We have been eagerly awaiting the return or relevant programming!

In The Sum of Parts, Boone-McCreesh has brought together four contemporary East Coast artists who utilize repetative processes as the engine to building larger works. Sculpture, installation and drawing are explored through techniques such as knitting, cutting paper and mold-making for this multi-media exhibition.

‎"Every feeling or desire we possess has been bought, sold or hijacked, debased or alternatively hyped into unreality, repressed or recuperated. Almost everything we care about has been turned into a commodity. But under a mountain of new gadgets and consumer items, in the midst of the 'new leisure society' and its cultural spectacles, we find ourselves cut off from real communication, frustrated and unhappy. Our isolation causes us to imagine that other people are happy and we wonder why our happiness eludes us." - Spectacular Times No. 12 (The Bad Days Will End), 1983 (via Gerry Mak's Facebook Status Update 1.21.2012)

Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez' Make / Shift subtly examines the contemporary labor dichotomy through a series of structures and images that straddle the boundary of physical and digital; design and execution. Each suggests the abundant production of real-estate and commodity along with entrepreneurial expansion, while giving equal visual attention to the issues of shoddy construction, compensation inequity, and halted production. Flooded with disparate messages of economic turmoil and the constant marketing of luxury goods via every available media outlet, Alvarez borrows from both news and advertisements to create a series of work that sneaks into the gap between the value of labor and the price of goods.

Growing up a Cuban-American artist, Alvarez witnessed first-hand the divide in pay-scale between arduous, physical toil and specialized professions. Watching his father work a demanding landscaping job for a wage comparable to a few hours of his own design work, an inevitable guilt and unease began to pervade his practice. By incorporating construction material and building technique into his artwork Alvarez illustrates, and finds some personal reconciliation with that divide, while highlighting its larger societal implications.

A colorful work table, edged in custom paint treatments sits in the middle of space. Clean and functionless, the aesthetics and specific object arrangement take precedence over the practical, a 3D model of a work-table design. Hung on the walls around it are similarly color-treated images of interiors, building projects and immaterial monuments. Using free source imagery, photography of abandoned or unfinished housing developments, office parks, and temporary sets from Hollywood movie productions, Alvarez pacifies tensions with the application of a smooth, even gradient, creating deceptively elegant, glossy vignettes. Contemporary ruins are treated with a false-front of posterized perfection, the current state of decay is preserved and flattened into abstract digital illustrations. 1980's era color schemes and virtual spaces further reference a false commercial flourish. Transforming dormant, physical spaces into large-scale prints has turned each individually designed building into a labor-less duplicable and effectively marketable product once again. The print costs are low, the idealized commercial language is familiar, and our responses are conditioned.

In a large vitrine sits a pile of misshapen cast concrete skulls, each with a plastic happy face icon from an Asian grocery bag embedded in its surface. Behind it in an altar-like arrangement, two collages with the same plastic faces, deformed by heat transfer, float upward in the composition. The piece serves as a small monument to the countless international workers on whose backs American wealth was built. With a political emphasis on new jobs and stimulating the economy through spending, there is a tendency to ignore the crumble, oppression and unattractive excess of our rapid low-quality / high-priced material production.

Staging over Manipulation is a group exhibition which brings together four artists whose works transcend traditional processes of manipulation. The exhibition explores roles in which artists set and shape the organizational context. These artists’ works reflect on attributes of a culture that demonstrates a malignant conscience in exposing an excessively branded society. While employing methods typically used for staging, the artists challenge not only the contextual framework of branding, they also expose the arena from which works are seen, i.e., the art branding syndicate.

From his Obiturary:

Its 80s indoorsy vs 70s summer in Current Gallery's simultaneous exhibitons, Full Color (John Bohl, Justin Kelly and Bettina Yung) and Look Book (Russell Hite and Elena Johnston). Digital / decorative motifs and cold color, from pastel to RGB are favored in the individual and collaborative works of Bohl, Kelly and Yung. Exhibiting sculpture, prints, video and painting, the handmade, found, digital and even individual voice melt into a cool, consistent aesthetic.

Hite and Johnston's Look Book in the smaller gallery feels like a trip to an awesome desert vintage store. Warm colors, collage, totems, imagined artifacts, animals etc. The works are all beautiful, summery and (ahem) very affordable.

"Out of Practice" draws parallels between work that reflects its own materiality, deconstructs its own creation, and refers directly to the studio environment in which it was created. This meta approach serves as the basis for finding new ways to experiment within the medium of painting- expanding its limits, while drawing from a rich history of influences. In realizing such direct combinations of canvas, wood, paper, and pigment, the works in this exhibition evince a formalist minimalism as vestige of the long hours spent alone in the studio.

Nudashank is pleased to present The Shape Of Things To Come, an exhibition of abstract, sculptural paintings and objects by Brooklyn-based artists Stacy Fisher, Tracy Thomason and Maria Walker, in conjunction with the Transmodern Festival. The works of the three artists, while comprised of varying materials, share a similarly casual, wonky posture. Falling somewhere between sculpture and painting, works balloon off the walls, hang from the ceiling, sag in imperfect shapes and collectively posess a subtle animation that ties into the Transmodern aesthetic, while remaining grounded in abstraction and object art.

Stacy Fisher received a BFA from Ohio State University. She has recently exhibited at Cleopatras in New York, in a two-person show with Gary Panter, Heskin Contemporary, The Bronx River Art Center, and with Daily Operation.

Tracy Thomason has a BFA from MICA and an MFA from Cranbrook. She was recently included in a group show at James Fuentes in New York,

Maria Walker received an MFA in painting from Tyler School of Art. She has exhibited at Camel Art Space, NYU's Rosenberg Gallery, Sideshow Gallery and as part of the FAWC Visual Fellows Invitational exhibtion in Provinctown, MA.

Former Baltimore resident and friend, Jamillah James, mounts her fellowship exhibition at the Queens Museum this Sunday! We are very excited for and proud of her!

Participating artists: Taylor Baldwin, Clifford Borress, Barb Choit, Brendan Fowler, Ted Gahl, Rashawn Griffin, Faten Kanaan, Zak Kitnick, Jason Lazarus, Lauren Luloff, Dave Murray, Amanda Ross-Ho, Jean Shin, Hayley Silverman, Agathe Snow, and Bryan Zanisnik.

As museums have mounted more exhibitions from their permanent collections, revisiting their archives and breathing new life into years’ worth of holdings, this generation’s artists are also looking back-revisiting materiality, composing and recombining nontraditional materials, perhaps out of necessity, or as a comment on a collective loss of intimacy through lives lived online. NOT THE WAY YOU REMEMBERED explores how collecting and displaying personal, physical objects creates and recreates memories and associations, both individual and collective. Collecting here refers to the artist’s methodology, with the amassing of specific, charged materials being central to their practice, or, simply, a visual accumulation of things. With the process of selection and presentation often made explicit in the work, the items assembled project “specialness” or preciousness, while often lacking that quality inherently. Situating the ordinary, banal, familiar or personal into grander narratives activates new sites of tribute and remembrance. Considering the popularity of television programs about collecting (and hoarding), we are reminded that sentiment and physical attachments are powerful motivators. The artists inREMEMBERED use the power of association to explore the ways in which objects become invested with emotional and intimate value. The resultant arrangements-of trophies, scrapbook clippings, family snapshots, replicas of cultural artifacts-begin to collapse the distance between spectator and object in the sometimes alienating space of a museum, reconnecting viewers to the physical, emotional world of memory and daily experience in an age where the virtual often displaces the real.

Beginning with French artist Arman’s response to Yves Klein in 1960 through the accumulative installations of Ilya Kabakov and Thomas Hirschhorn, that which governs what can be considered “junk” has often hinged on context. The 16 artists in this exhibition are using certain strategies of their forebears to engage in their own explorations of time and place-marking through material, while initiating new dialogues around worth and significance. To borrow from the time-worn adage, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure-or in this case, another museum’s.

Their plane crashed high in the Andes. Their only shelter was the plane’s shattered fuselage, their only supplies a little wine and some bits of candy. In the beginning, there were thirty-two survivors. Then, only twenty-seven; then, nineteen . . . and, in the end, sixteen.

This is their story---the greatest modern epic of catastrophe and human endurance.

A theatrical adaptation based on the novel Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read (1974) as well as the 1993 film.

While the 2011Armory Show was less impressive than past years, major galleries absent from exhibiting, there were still a handful of galleries that brought their A-game and made the fair memorable. Baltimore-based artist SETH ADELSBERGER has taken a dramatic leap in his work since his 2009 solo exhibition “Semi-Final Frontiers” at Civilian. In that time he has pursued a curatorial path as co-director of Nudashank (a gallery in Baltimore run with his partner Alex Ebstein). Stepping back to see a bigger picture of how works thread into a greater whole, Adelsberger has departed from his signature vivid, sci-fi psychedelia based works to examine the mechanisms, literally and philosophically, behind painting.

Pursuing a more experimental process in the studio, Adelsberger released himself from constraints, particularly that of “creating worlds” on the canvas. Instead he focused on, according to the artist, “creating a body of work that references painting but in many cases doesn’t involve painting directly.” The new work deconstructs painting to its base elements - the structures, supports, formats, and materials.

The work in “Bordering on Painting” is also a study and consideration of the last century of abstract painting—Picasso, Pollock, Stella, Rauschenberg, Judd, Richard Tuttle—and an intuitive, consideration of their issues and materials. Stretcher bars, canvas, paint, glue, and broken frames are affixed bare and woven into sculptural combinations that hang on walls. In these pared-down, referential constructions, Adelsberger considers multiple forms and creates intriguing and sometimes disagreeable objects that invariably hold the viewer’s interest. One is forced to consider intent and influence; it is hard to not have an opinion. Further, the diversity of work presented in the exhibition suggests a range of possibilities for his future work.

A graduate of Towson University, Adelsberger has had solo exhibits at The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Sara Nightingale Gallery in Watermill, NY, Flashpoint in Washington, DC, and CURRENT Space, Baltimore, MD. Recent group shows include Goodship Lollipop at CTRL Gallery in Houston, TX and End of Daze at Space 1026 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the recipient of an Individual Artist Award (Highest Honors) in

1019 7th Street NW / Washington, DC / 20001 / p: 202-607-3804 / f: 202-280-1086 / www.civilianartprojects.comPainting from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2008. His work has been published in New American Paintings in 2003, 2005, and 2008 (issues #45, 57, and 75 respectively). He has been a semi-finalist for the Sondheim Prize (twice), Trawick Prize, and Bethesda Painting Awards.

Nudashank is pleased to present Color Me Bad, an exhibition that brings together the work of four artists who approach painting with a raw, brash directness. Whether through crude simplicity, slack application, or “dumb” subject matter, the work on display pushes the viewer outside of their comfort zone, challenging their expectations of beauty, refinement, and finish. Revisiting the conversation instigated by the New Museum in 1978 (with their exhibition “Bad Painting”) in a contemporary, post-photoshop and post-internet context, Color Me Bad reminds us that clarity and resolution are not co-dependent. In the midst of a slick, polished digital era, these artists fumble and goof with cool self-awareness, stressing the importance of the imperfect and human.

The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Psychic Projections/Photographic Impressions: Paranormal Photographs from the Jule Eisenbud Collection on Ted Serios. For several years in the 1960s psychiatrist Dr. Jule Eisenbud, a faculty member at the University of Denver, conducted experiments with Ted Serios, a Chicago man who possessed an apparent ability to place images from his mind onto Polaroid material using psychic energy. Over the course of these experimental sessions Serios produced a vast body of photographs, or "thoughtographs," that continue to baffle researchers and critics to this day.

Drawn from The Jule Eisenbud Collection of Ted Serios and Thoughtographic Photography in UMBC's Photography Collections, the photographic images in this exhibition illustrate Serios's paranormal abilities, reveal themes and unique characteristics of his "thoughtographs," and offer insight into the extensive body of scientific experiments whose results have never been disproven.

On Thursday, February 3rd at 6pm, Dr. Stephen E. Braude, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy at UMBC, will present a public lecture on Serios's work.

Jordan Tierney and Geoff Grace see what most might not—they collect and then create. Very often the found objects or images dictate the process, but the end result is specifically theirs…a tangible, yet ephemeral point of view that seeks out beauty in desolation and creates poetry from that which is cast aside or forgotten.

Geoff Grace spends a great deal of time observing his subjects. His art is reflective and quiet at first glance, but it is loaded with historical traditions and references to biology.

Jordan Tierney transforms discarded objects, objects full of “Ju Ju” and the weight of history. Often carved of wood, her work is solid and substantial, yet magical and weightless lyricism is at its core.

In the upstairs gallery, Tim Campbell's Golden Afternoon, combines found text, popular imagery, abstract painting, and sound in a body of work that addresses landscape as an exhausted mode of representation. Works referencing terrorist manifestos, 19th century fiction, and American cartoons raise questions about the divide between nature and technology in American imagery. Campbell is interested in how layering, erasure, repetition and duplication can challenge the singularity of a painting's image. He is also interested in our relationship to a natural world that is closely entwined with a technological one, and in how the construction of images can direct our understanding of these two realms.

Both artists create work that feels older than it actually is, work that echoes past lives. They employ a sense of patina or a weathered quality, yet the work is contemporary, fresh, and potent in its impact.

’Me too, I’m a painter’ means: me too, I have a soul, I have feelings to communicate to my fellow-men.” –Jacques Ranciere

In “The Ignorant Schoolmaster” Jacques Ranciere writes, “The virtue of our intelligence is less in knowing than in doing. Knowing is nothing, doing is everything.” It is in this sense that Ann Kelly and Christina Martinelli’s works embody a specific intelligence. These works are about doing. They present themselves simultaneously as objects and ideas, as poems. It is, as Ranciere says, “The impossibility of our saying the truth, even when we feel it, [that] makes us speak as poets,.., makes us communicate our feelings and see them shared by other feeling beings.”

By employing everyday materials and heavily abstracted imagery, while never failing to hide their own “hands” as artists, Kelly and Martinelli’s works are expressive without irony or kitsch. They engage the possibility of “universal experience” with sensitivity and sincerity. Mondrian wrote “art is…the direct expression of the universal in us – which is the exact appearance of the universal outside us.” It’s this direct expression of the universal that these works approach in their confusion of art and life. In conversation with Cindy Nemster, Eve Hesse speaks of this confusion:

“[People say] you can’t confuse life and art. But I think art is a total thing. A total person giving a contribution. It is an essence, a soul … in my inner soul art and life are inseparable. It becomes more absurd and less absurd to isolate a basically intuitive idea and then work up some calculated system and follow it through – that supposedly being the more intellectual approach – than giving precedence to soul or presence or whatever you want to call it … For me it’s a total image that has to do with me and life. It can’t be divorced as an idea or composition or form.”

This confusion of things is what makes these works vibrant, daring, and challenging. They refuse to function on a singular plane. We should as Rainciere says, “learn near those who have worked in the gap between … the silent language of emotion and the arbitrariness of the spoken tongue, near those who have tried to give voice to the silent dialogue the soul has within itself, who have gambled all their credibility on the bet of the similarity of minds.”

Perhaps Cindy Nemster put it best as she interviewed Eva Hesse:

EH: So I am stuck with esthetic problems. But I want to reach out past…I want to give greater significance to my art. I want to extend my art perhaps into something that doesn’t exist yet…

CN: Like falling off the edge?

EH: That’s a nice way of saying it. Yes, I would like to do that.

In December, WORMS is going to be all juvenilia. Every writer will be performing work they created when they were much younger, more innocent, less worldly.

This month's readers include:

CRICKET ARRISON came to Baltimore in the heady summer of 2008 with a heart full of wonder and a song on her lips. Her dreams came true when she was recently installed as the third member of the Un Saddest Factory Theatre Company. She likes the White Mountains of New Hampshire a whole lot. If you tune your radio to 88.9 at 6:56 pm every Monday - Thursday evening, you will hear her name.

LAUREN BENDER is: 1/3 of Narrow House, 1/1 of curator of the Show&Tell series, and 1/2 of the Bender Twins.

AMY HARMON grew up young on Cape Cod, and moved to several other places after that. She received a BA in French, Art History, and Film Studies from the University of Massachusetts in 1999 and has been singing in the Lexie Mountain Boys for about 5 years now. She loves Baltimore real bad and spends the vast majority of her time thinking about joke chemistry, teaching, irrational fears, Weird Al, and that brief yet magical window of time that was "post-NOT" but somehow "pre-CORNHOLIO."

DINA KELBERMAN went to school at Purchase College, where everything came together. She now lives in Baltimore, MD and is a founding member of Wham City. She makes comics, draws stuff, paints cardboard, website, and routinely brings garbage into the house. She loves her friends dearly. She recently aquired the rank of 4th place for Tetris lines on NES on Twin Galaxies. Please contact her at your slightest whim.

RACHEL MONROE

MELANIE O'BRIEN is a baby that grew up. Originally known as Melanie "Hayes", she has been writing since very young. Currently she is working on a project of secret poetry intended never to leave the house, which includes letters to her unborn baby, records of her dreams, and little tiny poems on post-its. Melanie has a respectable job and lives in Baltimore with, among others, her husband and a hungry, growing child in utero.

LOLA PIERSON is an MFA candidate at Towson. She is a founding member of The Un Saddest Factory, a Baltimore based DIY theatre company, and lives at the Bell Foundry. She won third place in the citypaper's fiction contest this year and is the author of many hit plays.

ADAM ROBINSON Adam Robinson grew up in central New York and started writing in earnest after Mrs. Brown, his 9th grade English teacher, praised his story, "Devastatingly Unjust." Since then, he's published work in numerous journals and in two books, including Adam Robison and Other Poems which the Baltimore-based press, Narrow House, released this past spring. He plays guitar in Sweatpants, a rock band.

ED SCHRADER

KIM TABARA lives and works in Baltimore City. He writes for the online magazine Beatbots. He is a contributor to WYPR's Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast. He will never win the City Paper's Annual Poetry and Fiction competition.

Festival favorites Alloy Orchestra (featuring Roger Miller of Mission of Burma / Birdsongs of the Mesozoic) return to Baltimore to perform their acclaimed score to Fritz Lang's newly restored COMPLETE METROPOLIS!

Lang's silent sci-fi masterpiece METROPOLIS premiered in 1927 at an epic length of 153 minutes -- but was an initial box-office failure, and instantly trimmed drastically to almost half its intended length. Much of the excised footage was considered lost forever, but a 2008 discovery in Buenos Aires has resulted in a newly restored version -- with 25 minutes of footage unseen for over 80 years!

Michael Dotson creates contemporary, synthetic landscapes that achieve a hi-tech sensibility through the use of low-tech media (paint and tape). Applying basic two-point perspective and color theory, Dotson creates vivid geometric simulations of imagined utopic environments. Interior and exterior virtual spaces are rendered with a hard-edged digital flatness that belies the fact that the work is made by the human hand.

From pimped out space-age cribs to a crashed, semi-submerged UFO in a crystal mountain lake, Dotson's imagery draws equally from video game nostalgia and idealized contemporary culture.

Also on view is a new series of pixelated marker drawings that turn universal pop symbology into personal iconography.

HAUNTINGDON AVENUE 2010 is a one-day community block party created by Remington residents for the community and the city of Baltimore to celebrate Halloween in a fun and safe environment. This year GRIA is partnering with Black Cherry Puppet Theatre to bring the art of puppetry to this already interactive event.

HAUNTINGDON AVENUE 2010 will brighten up the 2900 block of Huntingdon Avenue with a spooky festive spectacle featuring artwork and decorations made by Remington youth created in the community run Porch Art weekly workshops. It will also feature décor made by adult residents that result from weekly community craft gatherings.

Huntingdon Avenue residents are transforming their porches into interactive scary sets where you will be able to get your face painted, play a game, record a ghost story, or get your photo taken in costume! New additions this year include a puppet show porch brought to you from the guidance of Black Cherry Puppet Theater, walking street puppets, Hula Hoop master Spilly, stilt
walking from Paco Fish and performances by local musicians Ricky and Lennon La Ricci.
