Gallery Four, an independent exhibition space in Downtown Baltimore, features work by five artists from Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., and Baltimore. This newly renovated 4,000 sq.ft. gallery features site specific painting and sculpture by recent Trawick Prize winner
Maggie Michael, new sculpture and installation by
Bryan Savitz,
Jan Razauskas, Nikki Romanello, and photographs by
Steve Nyktas. Asterism, a term used in Astronomy, Gemology, and Typography, invokes concepts relating to luminance, change, and capricious relationships within the natural world. In particular the science of Astronomy describes Asterism as an arbitrary arrangement of seemingly unrelated stars that form a personal iconography or subjective constellation. This playful practice in observation suggests a child-like sense of awe for the complexity within the inexplicable and the abstract.

Asterism, the first show at Gallery Four since its reopening, grouped locally renowned artists (Maggie Michael) with MICA's recent BFA students. Despite the range in career-longevity, the show was altogether sophisticated, and surprisingly unified. The theme, a semi-abstract "separate yet connected" astronomy term seemed to accurately capture the presence of the exhibition. Each artist displayed a cohesive selection of work, using vastly different media but with a similar feel. Exhibiting artists:Maggie Michael, Bryan Savitz, Jan Razauskas, Nikki Romanello, and Steve Nyktas.
