The Sum of Parts, curated by Amy Boone-McCreesh @ MAP Feb 22

Curators' Incubator: The Sum of Parts
Curated by Amy Boone-McCreesh
February 22 - March 24, 2012

Reception and Curator’s Talk: February 22, 6-8pm

After the LONGEST-EVER wait and patient endurance of whatever the hell has been going on at MAP for the past year, Amy Boone-McCreesh FINALLY gets to present her excellent exhibition for [what would have been last year's] Curators' Incubator.  We have been eagerly awaiting the return or relevant programming!

In The Sum of Parts, Boone-McCreesh has brought together four contemporary East Coast artists who utilize repetative processes as the engine to building larger works. Sculpture, installation and drawing are explored through techniques such as knitting, cutting paper and mold-making for this multi-media exhibition.

Artists: Emily Barletta, Lauren Clay, Jerry Kaba and Nikki Painter.

Out of Order @ MAP

OUT OF ORDER
MAP’S DO-IT-YOURSELF BENEFIT EXHIBITION,
SILENT AUCTION AND PARTY!
APRIL 9, 2010

Saturday, April 9, 8 – 11pm

Maryland Art Place is thrilled to announce the return of Out of Order, the much-anticipated Do-It-Yourself spring benefit exhibition, silent auction and party!

A hugely popular Baltimore event, Out of Order is a one-night-only opportunity for collectors to acquire contemporary art at silent auction prices. Both emerging and experienced artists present their original work in a wide range of media with minimum bids set from $1 to $800. On event night, art makers and art lovers mix and mingle while enjoying the pleasures of music, food, wine and beer. Last year, a record-breaking 432 artists took part and hundreds of guests attended Out of Order.

Proceeds from the art sales are split 50/50 between MAP and the artist. Event revenue goes directly to support MAP’s programming throughout the year. This April, artists will have the chance to donate their unsold work to the Art Connection in the Capital Region (ACCR), a valuable organization that places donated works in the facilities of not-for-profit social service organizations. To learn more about ACCR’s role in promoting contemporary art while improving the lives of individuals, visit: www.artconnection-cr.org.

LOSING YOURSELF IN THE 21ST CENTURY is a unique online curatorial project to be presented in a gallery exhibition and a series of public events at Maryland Art Place from February 4 to March 27, 2010. The exhibition features new work by young U.S. based women artists working in interactive and performative media to explore the idea of “self” in the 21st century. Their projects reveal how new media, information systems and consumer culture encourage personal expression at the same time they diffuse our sense of self and control our behavior. The artists alternately embrace, critique and transcend contemporary female identity.

Collaborative curators Cathy Byrd, Executive Director, Maryland Art Place, Baltimore; Susan Richmond, Contemporary Art Historian, Georgia State University Welch School of Art and Design; and Jillian Hernandez, Ph.D. Candidate in Women’s Studies, Rutgers University, developed the project and selected participating artists through the site losingyourself.com. A virtual exhibition and curatorial essays will be posted online in February 2010.

LOSING YOURSELF IN THE 21ST CENTURY is premised on the notion that contemporary media, information systems and consumer culture foster flexible and diverse notions of self and community while simultaneously, and increasingly, regulating new spheres of personal life and conduct. By producing spaces in which individualism and personal choices are simultaneously encouraged and curtailed, this network of cultural discourse blurs traditional distinctions between private and public, self-empowerment and self-surveillance, consumerism and activism. The exhibition examines this phenomenon through the perspective of emerging women artists.
