THE HEXAGON: THE HEXAGON SALON

The Hexagon Salon; the first in a series of yearly salon-style, juried exhibitions featuring up and coming Baltimore artists.  The winner will be featured in a solo show at The Hexagon Gallery during the month of November.

Jurors include:  Rick Santiago of the Art Under Ground Studios, Jed Dodds of the Creative Alliance and Johaniris Rivera Rodriguez of the Contemporary Museum.

Hood Rich, selections from Virginia Commonwealth University's Painting and Printmaking MFA Department. Through works on paper, sculpture, and time-based media, the artists in Hood Rich explore a wide range of themes from eerie to empirical, to spiritual to supernatural to banal and beyond.

Hood Rich artists include: Seth Alverson, Leah Beeferman, Catherine Brooks, Wesley Friedrich, Michael Kennedy Costa, Justin Kroman, Jonathan Marshall, Yi Sheng and Keith J. Varadi.

The Hexagon

The Hexagon presents Shallow Spaces, new work by Adam Beaver, Joe Delano, John Calvin Jones, and D'Metrius Rice. Shallow Spaces features mixed media paintings and works on paper by four Baltimore artists who find content at the boundary of abstraction and representation. Using fine line work, distorted portraiture, and a vivid palette that is prevalent in contemporary Baltimore art, these artists distill spatial relationships and psychological layering. The works in Shallow Spaces pair flat imagery with intricate color work, inviting viewers to explore a dialogue between concrete experience and metaphysical tension.

Baltidelphia @ the Hexagon

My House Gallery in South Philadelphia will also host an opening reception on January 9th starting at 6 PM. Light refreshments, and as always, all ages and BYOB for 21+.

The Hexagon, in conjunction with My House Gallery (Philadelphia), presents: Baltidelphia, an experimental collaboration curated by Phuong Pham (the Hexagon) and Alex Gartelmann (My House). The Baltidelphia exhibition features 21 Baltimore artists paired with 21 Philadelphia artists who were asked to collaborate/correspond through whatever means they chose--facebook, text message, twitter, carrier pigeon, postal mail, sky-writing, etc. Rather than get lost in the flood of tweeting that flickrs to your tumbl that feeds to your blog (LOL smileyface), Baltidelphia embraces communication, distance, and geography as points of departure to create a project.

Baltidelphia will be exhibited in both Baltimore and Philadelphia, with selections of the projects being displayed in each spaces. The Hexagon will have a soft opening on Saturday, January 9th, as some participating Baltimore artists will be traveling to My House Gallery for a joint opening reception. Philadelphia artists will travel to Baltimore, Saturday, February 6th for the closing.

Easter Rabbit Book Release Party and More Than Words gallery exhibition @ Hexagon

The Hexagon and Publishing Genius Press present: Easter Rabbit Book Release Party and More Than Words gallery exhibition.
December 12th, 2009 to January 3, 2010.
Opening Reception and Release Party: December 12 starting at 7pm

Baltimore author Joseph Young is celebrating the release of his book of microfictions, Easter Rabbit, by bringing together a diverse team of musicians, performers, and visual artists to add their vision to the book’s stories.

Easter Rabbit, published by local small press Publishing Genius, comprises 86 extremely short stories, with some stories as short as 17 words. At the release party, a team of actors will dramatize several of the stories, while a group of painters and other artists will show work inspired by the book. Local band Sweatpants will be on hand to play music composed especially for the event.

Artists included in the exhibition are Lauren Boilini, Graham Coreil-Allen, Kathy Fahey, Luca DiPierro, Paul Jeanes, Magnolia Laurie, and Easter Rabbit cover artist Christine Sajecki. Actors are Linda Franklin and Caleb Stine, directed by Nancy Murray. Sweatpants is Adam Robinson, Jamie Gaughran-Perez, and David NeSmith.

Hexchange opens @ the Hexagon

Hexchange, an emerging artist printmaking portfolio with over 40 participants nationwide. Following the exhibition, Hexchange will become a part of the permanent collections at the International Printing Museum in Southern California, and Goya Contemporary and Nudashank Gallery in Baltimore. Hexchange will also travel to Philadelphia for satellite exhibition during the Southern Graphics Council in 2010. Individual prints and whole portfolios will be available for purchase for the duration of the show.

An under-attended, free event featuring local noise performance which hopefully picked up speed and attendance as it shifted into its $10, 8-bit Fest portion of the show.
