The Contemporary Museum is pleased to present MY LIFE IN FICTION., an exhibtion of works by Kianga Ford featuring four newly-commisioned projects. Kianga Ford creates experiential and site-specific works that explore how narratives are constructed, manipulated, and understood in our culture. Her works take the form of sound recordings of short narratives, fragments of personal oral histories, and immersive sound or video environments that create a three-dimensional story experience. Ford’s works engage audiences in an almost cinematic escape, employing some of the conventions of film or theatre while confronting traditional narratives and their historic uses to support social, political, religious, or racial agendas.

There Were Ten Tigers

Part art and culture journal, part hipster society pages, relative newcomer to the growing Baltimore art blog community There Were Ten Tigers has been garnering attention, praise, and coveted blog-roll links since launching in March. And for good reason: Conceived by local artist and writer Alex Ebstein, Ten Tigers features smart, eloquently worded exhibition reviews and slick photos from the founder and her fellow contributors Sara Seidman, Dixie Johnson, and Mark Brown, while maintaining the youthful enthusiasm that sets it apart from other art blogs of local and national notoriety. Don't get us wrong, we still love old favorites like Bmore Art, but we're glad to have a little variety in the Charm City art blogosphere.

Wow. We are so flattered/honored/beside ourselves. Thanks Baltimore City Paper!!

Platters and Pourers @ Clayworks

Platters and Pourers, a group show of said vessels curated by John Glick, opens September 27th, 2008 from 6 - 8 pm.
According to the postcard, there are a hundred thousand included artists, I am anticipating diversity....hopefully along the lines of "Another Cup?" (an incredibly successful/awesome clayworks show from earlier in the year)
Also exhibiting in the solo, residents' gallery is Pamela Theis whose work can be seen here

Bestiarum Vocabulum Opens @ Rosenberg Gallery

Beastiarum Vocabulum, the new group show opening at Goucher College's Rosenberg Gallery, investigates the relationship between humans and animals, and the contemporary vocabulary created by artists who use them in their work.
The exhibition will be on view from September 15 - October 19, with an opening reception on Thursday, September 25, 6 - 8 pm.
Featured artists: Jessie Boyko, Melissa Dickenson, Lisa Dillin, Evan Morgan, Jenny Mullins, David Page, Beverly Ress, and Gowri Savoor.

From the catalog essay: A bestiary or bestiarum vocabulum was a book popular in the Middle Ages which contained illustrated descriptions of various animals, birds and even rocks. The natural history and illustration of each beast was typically accompanied by a moral lesson. In addition to providing intriguing interpretations of animals, bestiaries offered tales about the existence of bizarre and loathsome mythical creatures. Since that time animals have appeared in the visual arts in everything ranging from decoration to symbols and allegories.

The show, curated by Ten Tigers' friend/fav, Laura Amussen, is guaranteed to be excellent. Rosenberg is not that far away, carpool, take the city bus, take the college town bus (its free!), just make sure you get there, I promise it will be worth it.

Scenes From Long Roads; New Photos by Andy Cook @ School 33

Andy Cook, fabulous photographer and friend of Ten Tigers, unveils his new work in "Scenes From Long Roads" which opens at School 33 this Thursday, September 18 from 6 - 8 pm.

The exhibition will also have a closing event, which looks strikingly similar to the one I hoped to line up for my show, featuring AK Slaughter and The Art Department.....friend/band thief! That being said, please go support Andy's work and two phenomenal local bands October 17th.
