Melissa Webb's solo show of costumes, characters and installations brought a crowd out to Imperato, many for the first (and maybe only) time. Enlisting dozens of friends to wear the artist's costumes and accessories, gnomes passed around platters of food, ballerinas bartended and the uppity ladies on stilts towered over the gallery-goers. While the opening was the main event, the costume installations and photographs of Melissa's costumes, taken by Uli Loskot, will be on display through September 12.

For four weeks Gallery Imperato will be transformed into a mystical dreamland, a haunted forest, a magical storybook, a warehouse of the imagination. Elaborate hand-made costumes by fiber artist Melissa Webb will be on display from August 14 through September 12, 2009. A selection of related photographs by Uli Loskot, Lisa Dietrich, and aminibigcircus will accompany the wears.

Please join us at the opening reception this Friday, August 14th from 7-10pm. Guests can expect to be served by garden gnomes and mingle among hi-society stilt walkers!

(Gnomes and "Uppity Ladies" are a collaboration with M. Jane Taylor and company.)

Joy Goldkind was 50 years old before she took her first photography class, though her background was always based in the fine arts. Despite an unusually late start, Goldkinds career as a fine arts photographer has progressed rather rapidly. Her photographs of nude dancers, geishas, drag queens, ballerinas, circus performers, etc. have not gone unnoticed. Shot with Polaroid type 55 films her subjects are soft in contrast yet strong in spirit. Sometimes inspired from a fantasy world, the use of double exposures and slow shutter speeds help Joy to change what is true and expected into a more surrealistic scene. The old world beauty and quality they possess is in no doubt influenced by a deep interest in art history.

If you've never been down to Imperato, you'll be surprised at the alternative, divided space, with its exposed-brick walls, uncommon of most commercial galleries. The single room with a central column supports group shows nicely, as its spacial inconsistencies provide visual punctuation between each of the artists' work.
The show will be up through August 30th, make sure to check it out.
