Masked Opens @ School 33, Reception from 6 - 9 pm:
MASKED, curated by Joan Weber MASKED is an exploration of work about concealment, secrets, self-conscious and social constructions of identity which ultimately reveal a new face –a brilliant corona of strength, integrity and courage. Each work is a performance piece of sorts; the artists have used their own bodies or their own biographies to very directly create a presence that suggests a story or a secret. However, rather than being a study in psychology or narrative, where one might work to discover that secret, this assembly is exciting in that even while experiencing the powerfully posited content on the surface, we know that there is an equally powerfully complex internal life.

Mise En Scene Opens @ Paperwork Gallery

Paperwork's new show has branched out from its "works on paper" criteria, to the benefit of the exhibition. Mise En Scene, featuring the work of Audrey Collins Petrich, Lillian Bayley Hoover, and Guillaume Pallat, includes photography, paintings (on canvas!) and Petrich's multi-media installations. Each artist, and Petrich in particular, pays close attention to the design of their setting. Figures become secondary elements, and the interest is in the detail. As always, I prefer photographs in frames, but arranged as if stills from a film, Pallat's images read well and employ a consistent humor. Hoover's large paintings are a feat of technical expertize, although maybe a little rigid. It is really in Petrich's delicate dioramas that the theme is best articulated. Her work is personal and precise, balancing nostalgia and ambiguity.

Mise En Scene @ Paperwork Gallery

Stemming from the theater, the French term mise en scène literally means "putting on stage." When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement – sets, props, actors, costumes, and lighting.

Mise-en-scène also includes the positioning and movement of actors on the set, which is called blocking. These are all the areas overseen by the director, and thus, in French film credits, the director's title is metteur en scène, "putter on scene."

Storytellers is a group exhibition curated by Dana Reifler, Cara Ober, and NY Artist Rudy Shepherd.

Opening Reception: Friday, December 12 from 7-9 p.m.

Fashion From The Gutter Opens @ Paperwork Gallery

Guest curator and Gutter Magazine editor, J.M. Giordano, showed off two years of photography from the publication (his own and others') at Paperwork Gallery. The exhibition revisited classic Gutter imagery, both fashion-related and scenic, and favorite cover photos.

Being an online publication, Gutter's readers have no other opportunity to experience the images in a physical way. Because of this, I would maybe have liked to see these fabulous photographs larger than life...which was my only real complaint.

Bright Shiny New Opens @ Paperwork Gallery

Bright Shiny New, the current exhibition at Paperwork Gallery, features the work of recent BFA and MFA graduates. The included pieces are pretty interesting, but the show seems sparse... perhaps a lack of applicants? The Paperwork Gallery is a tremendous resource to new and emerging artists, and worth checking in with for their upcoming calls for entry/news/events. Take advantage of these things!
