Photos From the Opening of The Rumors Are True @ The Creative Alliance

Christine Sajecki
Christine Sajecki and Megan Hildebrandt opened their two person show of individual and collaborative works at the Creative Alliance this past weekend. With two distinctly different styles, (Sajecki showed super-slick, encaustic paintings while Hildebrandt exhibited drawings, collages and costumes) the two artists managed to impressively tie their work together in their collaborative installation (and title) piece, The Rumors Are True.

Megan Hildebrandt (pretty awesome)

And while you're at the Creative Alliance, don't miss the Minstallation Gallery's new, awesome exhibition, Soft Animal by Pamela Phatismo Sunstrum. It is my favorite minstallation so far!

Destructive Behavior Opens @ The Creative Alliance

Destructive Behavior, an exhibition of new work by Magnolia Laurie and Rene Trevino at the Creative Alliance, presents two very different bodies of work. Laurie's paintings and sculpture, in muted, stark colors, are a somewhat odd mix with Trevino's bold, colorful pieces on mylar. Laurie's sculpture (above), her strongest piece, best captures the apocalyptic/architectural themes in her work. Laurie's paintings fall a little short of expressing the impact of the partial, seemingly destroyed building forms. Many of the flatter, graphic ones are successful on their own, while others read as sketches to the larger work.

Rene Trevino's Aztec calendar symbols seem slick, and smart, but mostly remind me of Legend of the Hidden Temple - not a bad thing, I was an "orange iguana" for Halloween a few years ago.
The repeatitive, historic imagery loses its substance on mylar flags and wall pieces. Trevino turns the image into a decorative symbol, its meaning almost irrelavent (similar to mass-produced Indian tapestries in college dorms), recognizing the fall and recontextulization of an ancienct, grand civilization. A somewhat inevitable destruction/preservation of our own history.

Emily Slaughter admires the eyepiece
In the Minstallation gallery, Jennifer Strunge's eyepiece peers/pours out at viewers.
Destructive Behavior will be up through December 20, 2008 in the main gallery of the Creative Alliance. For more information on either of these exhibitions, visit the Creative Alliance's website.

Jennifer Strunge @ The Minstallation Gallery

"Eyepiece," a new miniature installation by Jennifer Strunge, opens this week.

OPENING RECEPTION THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6
6PM - 8PM!

MINSTALLATION GALLERY
CREATIVE ALLIANCE AT THE PATTERSON
3134 Eastern Avenue
Baltimore, MD

"Eyepiece" will be on view November 6—December 20.

An indisputable phenomeon the DIY art/craft scene, Jennifer Strunge's
goofy, stuffed Cotton Monsters are instantly recognizable and have
been shipped throughout the world. With Eyepiece, her creatures
inhabit the space like a dark corner of your imagination, peering back
out at you. A Baltimore native and practicing artist and puppeteer
since preschool, Strunge's work begs to be touched and doesn't take
itself too seriously. She works almost exclusively with recycled
cloth, giving old clothes, blankets, and linens an entirely new life
as they are reconstructed into comforting (if bizarre) quilts,
monsters and soft sculptures.

Geoff Grace's Minstallation Opens this Saturday, September 13th

OPENING RECEPTION THIS WEEKEND
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 5 - 7 PM

Geoff Grace inaugurates the fall season at the Minstallation Gallery with an opening this Saturday, September 13, from 5 - 7 PM.

let it out and let it in is the artist's first project since winning the 2008 Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize. In this quiet celebration of the wide open spaces of pop songs and the American highway, billboards pass by with the gentle rhythm of a road trip, slowly unfolding the lyrics to "Hey Jude."
