The Telepathy Drawings

In 2005, adjunct photography faculty John Morris '01 (M.F.A. Photography and Digital Imaging) and Christina Ayala '00 (Mount Royal School of Art) began telepathy drawings by transmitting and recording telepathic messages.
"The artistic collaboration is formed through a system of belief while working through the telepathic process," Morris said.
Each session lasts seven minutes, while Morris transmits a singular thought to Ayala. During the transmission, Ayala receives and transcribes the message through drawing, and Morris photographs the complete session with a large format camera. This image stands along with the drawing as a document of the collaboration.
"The project explores and confronts the junction of meaning, belief and collaborative nature in art making and viewing," Morris said. "The exhibition visitors, who develop their own criteria for the project's success, can examine and scrutinize the resulted, recorded messages and their subsequent meanings. This humorous critique of the process, as well as the implications for viewing art, makes the project so much fun to participate in, and think about."
In addition to the artists' own presented works in the exhibition, Morris and Ayala will install a Telepathy Station, inviting gallery visitors to create their own telepathic drawings.
MICA's galleries, which are free and open to the public, are open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. They are closed on major holidays.
There was also this cool installation by Suzanne Van Rest in the back room of the Hexagon. 
Cornel Rubino's Mondo Botanico, a show of large-scale drawings on the wall and on paper, opened at Park School last week. Rubino presents images of people interacting with animals, whimsical symbols like the cat's cradle, and plant life. Described as an installation for a "less than green world," one is asked to examine and consider these larger-than-life images in this context. Many drawn straight on to the wall, the images take on a semblance of cave paintings, making these natural and whimsical images seem antiquated and foreign.

The show also incorporated the entire student body, whose drawings in response to Rubino's exhibition fill the school's hallways. Organized by age group, or specific drawing classes, the walls show students wrestling with different ideas about drawing, and the (/their) environment.

Gary Kachadourian's solo show at the College of Notre Dame is cool, in that nonchalant, not-even-trying sort of way. He indulges in everyone's secret drawing desires: seeing one's notebook sketches of real-life objects at life-size, and a slick repetition of subject matter that has an incredibly pleasing aesthetic.
The life-sized drawings (made humbly of 8.5 x11 photocopies, tape and push pins) are hung in a simultaneously careful and devil-may-care manner, some cut around air vents and sprinklers while others are scrunched to fit into the gallery. 
Future projects for Kachadourian should include a life-sized, assembled version of these mini portable toilet plans. As they were, it was hard not to imagine cutting them out and folding them up.

Along with each drawing, the artists were asked to submit photos of the pens they used to complete their work. The photos are displayed with the artists' names per each section of the exhibition.
