Netmares/Netdreams, a show of computer/internet themed artwork instigated by Mark Brown and Kari Altmann, opened last night at the Current Gallery. Netmares/Netdreams @ Current Gallery

NETMARES/NETDREAMS
AUGUST 22 - SEPTEMBER 19, Friday - Sunday 11-3 pm

Opening reception August 22, 2008 7pm-10pm

Instigated by Kari Altmann and Mark Brown

Through a combination of online platforms, the international participants in this show have pulled together their own creations, found material, screen grabs, and more that can somehow be described as a "Netmare" or "Netdream".

What started out as a collaborative blog, eventually grew to other platforms (like Vimeo and Flickr) where it became an addiction to tag uploaded material at one end or another of the continuum between these two polar titles. In some cases things were tagged at both ends, in an ambiguous middle ground, or in a dimension beyond the reach of the spectrum itself.

As the amount of material grew, so did the definition for each term and the realization that it gave internet users relief to be able to classify the experiences they're inundated with online as "scary" or "lustworthy", both of which imply a level of intimacy and intimidation. Since post-structuralism the binary hierarchy has continued to be challenged, but in an online culture it can provide a highly accessible control among the struggle between technolust and technophobia, a duality reinforced by the media itself. Netmares/Netdreams aims to celebrate this continuum, mock it, test it, and ultimately transcend it.

While some participants have submitted their own artwork that already deals with these ideas, others are using it as a chance to exhibit detritus from their own net experiences.

The resulting array of cross-platform portals exposes uncanny valleys, peaks, plateaus, and crater holes.

Participants include:
Kari Altmann, Mark Brown, Petra Cortright, Harm Van den Dorpel, Ben Fino-Radin, Martijn Hendrik, Daniel Keller & Nik Kosmas (AIDS-3D), Guthrie Lonergan, Sara Manara, Pascual Sisto, James Whipple, Damon Zucconi, and many many more.

The instigators of this show are also planning a series of related performances, discussions, and parties.

Los Solos Series

The LOS SOLOS Series is an innovative monthly series of solo performances by groundbreaking female artists. The series presents the solo performance work of female dancers, musicians, writers, filmmakers, conceptual artists, theatrical performers, performance artists, and curators.

Each night of the series, which runs from September 2008 - March 2009 on the first Friday of the month, features the work of one local Baltimore and one national artist.

The Carriage House is a beautifully renovated carriage house located in lower Charles Village. The venue, owned and operated by local musician Dan Carney, provides a unique setting for these unique performances.

In the city known for it’s collaborative zeitgeist, the LOS SOLOS Series hopes to in addition recognize the strength of it’s solo performers.

The series is curated by visual artist Jackie Milad and musician/writer Bonnie Jones.

The first performance, on September 5th will feature local musician Melissa Moore, and Fursaxa, formerly a member of the Siltbreeze band UN.

For more information on the upcoming shows and participating artists, visit the Los Solos website.
