Some Jack Smith films + surprises @ the Red Room

Come watch two films "Overstimulated" and "I Was A Male Yvonne De Carlo" by underground filmmaker, pioneering performance artist, photographer, record collector, super star Jack Smith AND snacks and other films featuring the likes of Andy Warhol and Bela Lugosi.

OVERSTIMULATED (1960)
"This short film, restored in 1995, stars Jerry Sims and the late filmmaker, Bob Fleischner. It is an early filmic exploration of the 'aesthetic of delirium' which Smith developed in his later films.

I WAS A MALE YVONNE DE CARLO (1968)
"Shot mainly during the late '60s and edited a decade or more later, I WAS A MALE YVONNE DE CARLO is one of several films and slide shows that feature the filmmaker as a mock celebrity...Smith waits under the visible movie lights, drumming the fingers. A fan presents him with a black and white glamour shot (Smith in profile, posed with a sinuously curved dagger) to autograph as the Warhol Superstar Ondine, dressed entirely in black leather, snaps his picture. Violence erupts as the nurse takes out a whip to discipline the star's fans. When a female creature pulls out the same dagger depicted in the glamour shot, Smith jumps up and shakes the weapon from her hand. The action is post-scripted with footage of a steam shovel patrolling the rubble where the Broadway Central hotel once stood." -- J. Hoberman

Crossovers @ MICA's Pinkard Gallery

Wham City's Crossovers at MICA's Pinkard gallery is a show of individual and collaborative works by members of the collective. A survey of media, humor, projects and aesthetics that the group has become known for, the show presented the spectrum, rather than everyone's best work (which is not to say it was bad!). Bike Galleries by Dustin Carlson, Premiering @ Artscape, next stop: MIAMI!

Dustin Carlson fabricated three bike-trailor galleries which debuted at Artscape this past weekend. Ridden by Dustin, Brendan Rush and Gary Kachadourian, the project will be perfected and brought down to Miami during Basel in December!

Sondheim Semi-finalist Show @ MICA

The Sondheim Semi-finalist show was...weird. Really, really inconsistent, and not particularly interesting. Sure, its just a survey of the artists who were selected without any curatorial thread, but: work was separated, not grouped by artist, there was too much work for the space, nothing could really breathe, and some of it was just not good.... Our favorites were Kim Manfredi, Melissa Webb, Shaun Flynn, Dawn Gavin, Sebastian Martorana, and Evan LaLonde.
